Buildings in Matkakoski FI

Matkakoski is part of the valuable Lower Torne Valley landscape of national interest, extending from Karungi in Tornio to Nuotioranta in Övertorneå, forming a wide and cohesive cultural landscape.

The environment of the rapids fishing site at Matkakoski is important for the dipnet fishing tradition. The current building stock consists of two fishing huts, a rapids cabin, and a grilling area. In the 19th century, there were more huts—at most seven—and the area also included a traditional hut (kåta). The present building structure gradually took shape during the 20th century.

The existing fishing huts date from the 19th century, while the rapids cabin, used as a resting place, dates from the 20th century. In addition, there is a grilling area and an outbuilding built later and adapted to modern use.

At the fishing site, there are also several historical markings carved into stones and bedrock, telling of the area’s long-standing use and activities.

Storage building
The storage building is used to keep shared fishing equipment and tools needed for fishing at the rapids. Inside the building, the year 1886 is carved into the timber, likely indicating when the structure was built.
