The Fishing Museum
The Torne Valley Fishing Museum is in Kukkolaforsen, Sweden, in a cultural village surrounded by historic buildings managed by the city of Haparanda. The exhibition tells the story of fish and people along the Torne River. The museum is open in the summer and admission is free.
For centuries, fishing has been a central part of life in the region – it has provided food, livelihoods and has been strongly present in the culture. The museum explores fishing in a variety of ways: the fish species of the Torne River are presented with the help of underwater videos, the history of fishing methods is discussed from simple fishing gear to large dam structures, and the impact of fishing on people’s everyday lives and celebrations is discussed with the help of visual material.
